Having A Bridal Makeup Lesson

Photography by Cristina Lanaro

Should I Do My Own Wedding Makeup?

Many brides are turning to professionals for their wedding day, but for some brides, this may not be the right fit.

The first question you need to ask yourself is: Do you feel more comfortable doing your makeup?

If you prefer to be in complete control or have trust issues with someone else doing it, then straightaway doing your makeup will be the way forward.

Are you anxious about a professional doing your makeup on your wedding day?

If you have a set way of doing your makeup that makes you feel and look amazing, then asking someone else to take on this crucial task on your wedding day could fill you with dread and anxiety. It is not a bad thing to feel anxious; it is much better to feel relaxed and at ease on your wedding day than to sit worrying about how you will look.

Taking the lead and doing your makeup may be the answer.

Maybe you have had your makeup done professionally and were not happy with the result. It can be tricky to relay how you want to look and get the result you are looking for. Or maybe you are planning your wedding abroad and do not know any makeup artists to come to you.

Whatever reason is resonating, there is an option to achieve that bridal look using products and techniques that will look amazing on camera and last from morning to night. Booking a
bridal makeup lesson is the perfect answer if you feel you need some pointers on what products to use and the best way to apply it so your makeup looks more professional.

Booking a professional for a lesson to show you how to layer makeup is a vital step in the routine.

This is probably not something you would be doing in your current makeup routine. The key to long-lasting makeup that looks beautiful is the result of layering products, but in a way that doesn't look heavy and overdone. You want to still look like yourself and be happy with the photographs for years to come.

Techniques of applying makeup are also a factor in how well your makeup applies and looks on camera, and to the eye. You do not want to rush the application. Spend time on how you blend and the best way to hold your brushes to get the most optimal results.

Getting advice on the best products to use will make all the difference.

Not only will this give you a makeup bag full of new products that you can use time and time again, but you will also be getting advice on products that work well together and are complementary to your skin tone and features, such as your eye and lip colour.

Bridal Makeup Lesson Feedback

My bridesmaid and I had a makeup lesson with Nicola as I am getting married abroad. I couldn't recommend her highly enough, she really listens to what you want and the lesson felt totally personalised to our needs. Nicola is extremely knowledgable and gave us so many great recommendations and tips. She was patient and took her time to demonstrate which products to apply and how, without it feeling overwhelming. We both feel really confident now about doing our own make up for the wedding. It was also a really fun and relaxing experience.

Professional photography is less forgiving with makeup, so learning from a professional how to apply your makeup like a pro will be hugely beneficial.

Meet Sara; she contacted me in 2021 wanting to book a bridal makeup lesson for her wedding, which was taking place in Italy. Sara knew from the beginning that she and Francesca wanted to do their own makeup for the wedding but felt like they needed guidance with the best products to use and techniques to apply their makeup better.

They both wore minimal, natural-looking makeup on a day-to-day basis but knew that the makeup for the wedding day needed more thought and consideration. Their comfort levels and still wanting to look like themselves were taken into account, and together we created the vision they had in mind.

How The Lesson Is Structured

The lesson started with discussing their skincare routine, your makeup will only look as good as your skin. Preparing correctly always helps determine how well the makeup applies and lasts. We then moved on to the makeup application after discussing the colours they felt most comfortable with on the eyes and the type of finish they wanted on the skin.

We started with me applying the makeup to one side of the face and then getting both Sara and Francesca to replicate the techniques at each step of the routine. I ensured they both felt comfortable with the application and techniques.

There were a lot of tips shared, especially when it comes to layering bridal makeup to last the duration of the day while still looking beautiful and natural.

Both Sara and Francesca appreciated that makeup for a wedding is more evolved than your normal day-to-day wear and took on board all of the tips I shared. Sara kindly shared her wedding photos with me above, and I have to say they both did an outstanding job on their makeup; it genuinely filled me with pride that they both created such a beautiful replica of what we did in the lesson.
