Do I Need A Makeup Trial For My Wedding?

When Considering Your Makeup Artist For Your Wedding You May Be Thinking

"Is a bridal makeup trial really necessary?"

The simple and short answer is yes.

Not many brides would buy a dress straight off the rack without trying it on, or ask their caterers to produce a wonderful wedding breakfast without tasting it to check if it was to their liking and standards. You should view makeup as the same as any other supplier you have booked.

It is important to iron out any anxieties, nerves, or concerns you may have ahead of your big day so everything can run smoothly and hiccup-free.

But more importantly, a trial is necessary for the following reasons:

Reasons Why You Need A Trial

  1. A trial is the best way to pre-plan the final look so you can relax while getting ready.

Normally, there is not a lot of spare time on the wedding day that allows for any major makeup adjustments. The only way to factor in additional time is to start the makeup earlier in the morning, which could mean an earlier rise for you and your bridal party.

During a trial, we can work out the best look for you—a style that enhances your features while still looking like you are just a more polished version. It is the best time to figure out the most flattering colours that harmonise with your skin tone and eye colour.

If you are unsure of the makeup style you are looking for, this will give you the perfect opportunity to see what you like or do not like. It will give a baseline of what adjustments need to be made for the wedding day.

  2. A trial is a perfect opportunity to get to know your artist's personality and skill level.

You must be comfortable with who you book, and make sure they understand and listen to what your desired look is. You want to ensure that the person you book is the right fit for you and that you get along with them.

One of the last people you see before the ceremony will be your makeup artist, so you want to feel at ease.

  3. Ensuring the Makeup You Have in Mind Is Best Suited To You

There may be an element of the makeup that you have in mind that is not possible or achievable. This could be due to your skin type, face, or eye shape. It is so much easier to deal with these situations at a trial; the last thing you will want is a panicked and hurried wedding morning if the makeup has not gone to plan.

Your makeup artist will be able to guide you to the best look that enhances your features and complements all of the finer details.

  4. Not all the same skincare or makeup products will suit everyone.

A trial allows testing of the most suitable products and shows where any adjustments need to be made. There may be certain products that do not sit well on your skin, are difficult to blend, or just do not last the distance.

Ironing out any mishaps at the trial will make a smoother wedding morning experience. It will give you the confidence to know that your makeup will look amazing and will last, and it will give your makeup artist the opportunity to make any adjustments for the day.

What Can You Expect From Your Bridal Trial?

Any good makeup artist will want to get to know you and how you feel about the upcoming nuptials. They will want to get a feel for your personality and vibe, plus discuss any concerns you may have about the makeup. It is absolutely OK to feel nervous or anxious about how you will look.

It’s ideal to have something in mind, maybe images from Pinterest or makeup looks you have seen online, but if you are really not sure, let them know what you like and dislike about how you wear your makeup usually so we can build a picture of your comfort zone.

It is not unusual for brides to have no idea what they would like on the day, hence why the trial is more important than ever. Thankfully, brides trust me to create something they think will look amazing on them. For me, I want to know the colour of the bridesmaid dresses and the colour of the flowers so I can tie all the details together in the makeup to complement all the elements.

Skincare is a big element for my brides. Your makeup is only going to look as good as your skin underneath, so if you do not have a solid skincare routine already, this will also be discussed at the trial. I ensure I make good recommendations to help you improve your skin in the run-up to bug day.

Ideally, you want to be fresh-faced at the start of the trial so we can really see your true skin, and where possible, wear something white; other clothing colours can throw off the look of the makeup when you get to see it.

Are makeup trials worth it?

Let’s summarise,

  • You will have peace of mind about how you will look on your wedding day.

  • Any skincare and makeup issues will be ironed out before the day.

  • You will feel more calm and relaxed after meeting your makeup artist.

  • The best colours and styles will be fine-tuned to perfection for the day.

  • You will already have a taste of what the “wedding day experience” will be like.

  • It will give you the opportunity to discuss your likes and dislikes when it comes to makeup.
