Best Makeup For Mature Women

Makeup a mature woman should wear

Create a fresh routine suitable for your skin as it changes

If you are looking for help and guidance with the best makeup for mature women, let me assist with multiple product recommendations below.

Best Makeup For Mature Women

1. Primer To Help With Fine Lines And Pores

If you find you have visible pores and fine lines, a primer to help smooth the surface of your skin.

For women who have normal to dry skin, I encourage you to initially increase your skin hydration using a hydrating serum and moisturiser. You will be surprised how much smaller your pores look when your skin is hydrated.

If you are sure a primer is for you, The Ordinary high-adherence silicone primer smooths over lines and pores. Using this primer will help your foundation glide. This is one of my most trusted and used products for mature skin.

2. Avoid Heavy And Powder Foundations

Please avoid powder foundations at all costs! These formulas can look heavy and cakey on the skin. You want to select a cream or liquid foundation that you layer onto the skin in thin layers. Less is more with your foundation believe me!

If you want healthy, radiant skin, opt for a product that is dewy or satiny in finish. These will bring a subtle glow to your face and make you appear more youthful. Powder any areas of excess shine, such as your forehead, chin, and nose, with a translucent powder. If you have oily skin, opt for a foundation that has a matte or satin finish.

Be careful with how much foundation you apply; using too much will draw attention to lines and pores. Work in very light layers with a brush and blend it well into the skin in circular (buffing) motions.

3. Invest In A Concealer

Not every foundation will give you the coverage you are looking for. Particularly for dark circles, pigmentation, or redness. A concealer will be your best friend to help give extra coverage to these areas of concern.

Apply your foundation first, then assess your skin to see where else you need a little more coverage. Rather than go in with another layer of foundation, use a concealer to build up the areas you need a little extra coverage.

My advice is to use a concealer that is similar in tone to the foundation. Avoid using a lighter shade under the eyes as this will create a grey-ashy feel to the skin. Cream and liquid concealers will be best to use, avoid stick formulas as this will look ageing and drying.

4. Do Not Fear Blusher

The power of applying blush as part of your routine is incredible. You can create youthful radiance with just a small sweep of colour. If you have redness on your skin, or you flush, the blusher will not make it worse. The foundation and concealer will cover up the redness so you can build a healthy colour on the skin that does not mimic skin redness.

If you like using powder blush, opt for something with a slight shimmer. Estée Lauder Pure Colour Envy Sculpting Blush has a beautiful range of shades. Be mindful to build the powder up very by dusting it on your cheeks. Cream blush can be more flattering on the skin, you can blend it into your foundation and help it look more natural. Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturiser Blush is a great option.

5. Warm Up Your Skin With Bronzer

When you apply foundation it can take away the natural colours and contours of your skin. You can look a little one-dimensional. Add shape and warmth to your face by using bronzer. Bronzer is best used on your face, where you would normally catch the sun, think of your forehead, temples, high points of your cheeks, nose and jawline.

6. Using Eyeliner To Define And Enhance

Using eyeliner along your top lash line will make a massive difference to the eyes. The best way to apply it is as close to the lash root as possible. Using small, little strokes on the lashes will give you a more subtle effect. Smudge the liner with a cotton bud or your fingers to diffuse the liner so it does not look too harsh.

My top tip for eyeliner is to opt for brown; it is far more forgiving and very flattering as we age.

7. Groom Your Brows

Take the time to groom your brows, this will make a huge difference to your makeup and the structure of your face. Brows frame your face and can help you look more youthful.

I find that the Laura Mercier Eye Brow pencil is easy to use. The formula is nice and soft and transfers the right amount of colour. You also have a brush on the other end to blend the product through with your natural hairs.

If you lack of patience, or time, the Benefit Gimme Brow is a great choice of product. It is a tinted gel with small fibres within the formula. It attaches the fibres to your existing brow hairs resulting in fuller-looking brows. This product is a game-changer.

8. Line Your Lips

If you enjoy wearing lipstick but find it does not last very long, or bleeds, apply a colour-matching lip liner. For thin lips, you can create a fuller look by overdrawing along your lip line.

Products I recommend;

9. Enhancing Your Eyes

If you want to create a look which will make your eyes pop, or just a subtle daytime look, these are the eyeshadows that I recommend. Investing in eyeshadow powders is my advice, you want the quality to help them to blend more seamlessly.

Client Testimonials

My lesson with Nicola was absolutely brilliant. I learnt new techniques and even things like how to hold the brushes and how much pressure to apply them was super helpful. The range of products was helpful and Nicola explained where to splurge and where cheaper brands are fine. She also gave me some tips to make the most of the products I’ve got. I’d definitely recommend to anyone else looking to get more confident with make up and save money by buying the right products and using them in the right way. Thanks Nicola! - Natalie

I received a makeup lesson with Nicola as a Christmas gift. The experience was great fun and also educational. Nicola is friendly and knowledgeable; she put me at ease and did a great job of explaining techniques and choosing makeup that made the best of my (aging!) features. The follow up email with lots of helpful advice and reminders about how to repeat the finished look, together with recommended products, was much appreciated. - Emma

I'm very happy with my new natural look makeup. It needed refreshing as I had become stuck with the same look which needed updating along with getting older. I have had lovely comments from friends. Nicola gave me some wonderful tips to move forward with. - Julie

Had a great make up lesson with Nicola. I was a bit stuck not sure what make up or skin care to use for my age but she was so helpful. I have bought all the products recommended, not all high end ranges either so affordable. I would thoroughly recommend to mature ladies looking to feel more confident - Diane
