Have You Thought What Questions to Ask a Makeup Artist Before Hiring Them for Your Wedding?

You have probably taken care of all the bigger bookings for the big day and are now starting to think about the finer details. But what do you need to think about when it comes to booking a makeup artist?

Do you need to even worry about asking questions before committing to a booking? They are all the same, right?

Specialising in wedding makeup is a skill and a commitment. There are so many things an artist has to factor in: timing, doing multiple makeup applications, keeping to a tight schedule, having the right products in their kit to withhold up to 16 hours of wear, and products that photograph well.

You really need an artist with experience of wedding mornings, as they are like no other; there is a lot going on and the time flies by like you wouldn’t believe. You need someone in control of their area who can deliver on time and to a high standard. All makeup artists are very approachable, and we have the same end goal: to help you look and feel amazing on your wedding day.

What Questions Should I Ask A Makeup Artist For A Wedding?

  1. Do you specialise in wedding makeup?

  2. Will you travel to me for the trial and wedding day?

  3. How many people are you able to do makeup for?

  4. How long will makeup take on the wedding day?

  5. Do you have insurance?

  6. What is your booking process?

  7. When should a trial take place?

  8. Is there anything I need to do before the trial or wedding day?

You need to have full confidence in who you book; you want to be able to trust them and know that they will put you at the heart of everything. Ultimately, we are here to serve you and to make your wedding morning as smooth and enjoyable as possible.

It can be overwhelming to choose who to book, but my best advice? Look at their work first and foremost. It is important that you love their style of makeup; everyone works differently. You want to feel a connection with the person; that can be from their website, the way they present themselves, or when you chat with them on the phone or over email.

You need to gauge what is important to you. Everyone is priced differently based on location and skills. If price is the main factor for you, you may have to forgo something else, like the type of brands they use, for instance. Pricing not only reflects the skill of the person but also the type of products they choose to invest in; makeup is not cheap.

If you are looking for someone with experience, skill, and knowledge who uses beautiful luxury brands, then the price will not be so much of a factor. It is worth noting down what you are looking for before you contact multiple people. Keep it simple: if you are looking at lots of people, cut the list down to your top 3 based on what you want from the experience and with whom you feel connected.

  5. Share any looks you have in mind.

How Does Nicola Louise Makeup Fair With The Questions?

Do you specialise in wedding makeup?

Nicola - Absolutely, I have had it since the very beginning of my makeup career, which started in late 2014. My first solo job was for a wedding.

Will you travel to me for the trial and wedding day?

Nicola - I am fully mobile and will always travel to my clients. It makes it far more convenient for you, which is the goal, so you can feel relaxed in your own surroundings.

How many people are you able to do makeup for?

Nicola - It all depends on the time of the ceremony. I can easily do makeup for 5 people, sometimes up to 6 or 7, depending on how much time is available in the morning.

How long will makeup take on the wedding day?

Nicola - I tend to allow 1 hour for the bride, 45 minutes per bridesmaid, and between 30 and 40 minutes for the mother of the bride and the mother of the groom.

Do you have insurance?

Nicola - Yes, definitely. Anyone who does not have insurance is not taking their business seriously and is certainly not putting their clients first.

What is your booking process?

Nicola - I like to think it is really straightforward and easy. I welcome potential clients to contact me via my contact form so you can check my availability.

All the information I require is asked in one go to limit multiple emails back and forth. Once availability is confirmed, you usually receive a response within 2 hours, and if you are happy to book, I will provide you with some trial dates.

Once you decide on your trial date, I will issue a booking confirmation/invoice, and a payment of a £100 booking fee will secure your date.

When should a trial take place?

Nicola - I like to keep the trial near the wedding due to the tones in the skin being more accurate to the wedding day. The trial is usually booked 8–12 weeks in advance.

Is there anything I need to do before the trial or wedding day?

Nicola - Look at your skincare routine and make sure you are cleansing twice daily, using a skin-specific serum, moisturising morning and night, and exfoliating a couple of times a week. Try to increase your water intake too.
