Wedding makeup is not just about the makeup itself; it needs to start with a good skincare routine. Assuming you want your makeup to apply well, last all day, and look incredible, first look at what you are currently doing with your skin.

If you are not sure where to start or haven't even had a skincare routine before, grabbing a copy of my Bridal Beauty Guide will start you off.

The key skincare products you want to consider are:

  • Cleanser (day and night)

  • Exfoliating (weekly)

  • Targeted Serum (daily)

  • Eye cream (daily)

  • Moisturiser (daily suitable for your skin type)

Once you have your skincare routine in place, you can start thinking about and creating the bridal style that suits you and will enhance your features and skin tones.

Eye & Brow Makeup

When considering the colours that will suit you, you want to consider your hair tone, eye colour, and skin undertones. The makeup should be in harmony as one rather than having certain colours standing out more than the others.

Eyeshadow:

Enhancing your eye colour and making them pop will be determined by the shades you choose to apply. You want the colours to be flattering and bring a sparkle to your eyes rather than appear dull and tired.

Here is a guideline on the best shades, depending on your eye colour:

Brown Eyes: Copper, Gold shades, Deep Mauves, Pinks, Purples and Dark Browns.

Blue/Grey Eyes: Browns, Earth Tones, Greys/Silver, Lilac, Soft Peaches, Rose-coloured shades, Burnt Orange, Copper and Deep Golds.

Green/Hazel Eyes: Dusky Pinks, Deep Plums, Burgundy, Grey, Mauve, Warm Brown.

It’s not only your eye colour that you need to consider when choosing your eyeshadow. You also need to factor in whether you have a "warm, cool, or neutral” skin tone. This is determined in a few different ways.

As a guide;

Warm under tone - you tan easily, suit gold jewellery, and you have green veins on your wrist.

Cool under tone - you burn easily, silver jewellery is more complementary to your tone, and you have blue veins.

Neutral under tone - you pick the sun up a little with a minor tan, but usually burn first. You can easily wear both tgold and silver jewellery with neither looking too stark against your skin tone. You have a mix of green and blue veins on your wrist.

As a rule if you have a warm skin tone, try to stick to warmer shades; these will complement your overall look better. Cool skin tones should stick to cooler shades.. If you are neutral in tone, then you are able to wear both warm and cool eyeshadows without looking “off”.

Eye Primer:

Before applying eyeshadow always prep the eyelid with a primer. This will help with the longevity of the eye makeup, but it will also give you a blank canvas. When we neutralise the discolouration on the lids prior to eyeshadow application your eyeshadow will show up more true to colour.

Eyeliner:

If you are keen to wear eyeliner my advice would be to stay away from liquid and pen formulas for your wedding day. The reason being is these products can look quite stark and will draw eyes away from the rest of the makeup. Your wedding makeup should be complementary and in harmony so the best way to get an amazing eyeline is with pencil, or using a deep eyeshadow.

Brows:

For brows you can choose between pencil, pomade, or gel. This will completely depend on how comfortable you feel with the application.

Face Makeup - Highlighter, Primer, Foundation & Concealer

If you want a little extra glow and dewiness for your wedding day, I recommend either mixing in one of these products into your foundation, or applying it to your face prior to foundation. You can also add a little bit more on top of your makeup on the highest point of your face.

You will want to use concealer under the eyes and for any areas of the face where the foundation may not have given complete coverage.

Face Makeup - Bronzer, Blusher & Setting Sprays

Bronzer:

After the application of foundation and concealer, you can start to look one-dimensional so I like to use bronzer and blush to bring some shape and life back to the skin.

Blusher:

When it comes to blush you want it to enhance your skin tone and give you a complementary flush of colour, it needs to be in harmony with your skin.

As a guide these are the shades you should be considering;

  • Fair Skin - Baby pink, Peach, Light Coral, Plum

  • Medium Skin - Apricot, Peach, Berry, Rich Pink

Setting Sprays

Helping your makeup to stay in place for a full day is a combination of a few factors. Your skin prep and the products you use for your skin type, the primer you use if you have oily or combination skin, the selected foundation for your skin type, the application of the products, and of course, setting your makeup at the end with a spray.

Lipstick

Lipstick is a must-have to finish off the look. If you are worried about getting your colour to stay in place, grab yourself a bottle of Lipcote, which is a lip sealant. It is absolutely brilliant and one of my kit secrets.

Investing in makeup brushes that will apply your makeup well, wash and reshape perfectly every time, and are made to be great excellent quality are just as important as the makeup products you buy. Spending money on cheap brushes is not going to cut it.
