How Do I Learn Basic Makeup?

How Do I Learn Basic Makeup

The power of makeup can be transformative.

Elegant, polished, radiant, and confident

There are a few different avenues you can take to learn how to apply basic makeup. YouTube is probably your main source of knowledge, though, from experience, it is tricky to adjust the routine for yourself. Not all products and techniques demonstrated are suited to all; you need to cherry pick what works for you and research the products carefully.

Then, of course, you can do research online, consume blogs and articles about the best products and techniques to use, and piece it all together. This can be a little time-consuming, but if you have the time and patience, it can be an enjoyable experience.

Makeup counters are an option, but you are restricted to the one brand you approach. From my personal and professional experience, not all the products from one brand are amazing. But that is just my opinion.

A personal makeup lesson with a makeup artist, like myself, I feel is the best all-round experience. You will get non-biased, authentic opinions about the right products and colours suited to you. Most lessons available with professionals will have hands-on experience, so not only will you get the chance to master applying your makeup, you will also learn the best techniques to use.

My own personal makeup journey started many years before I trained to be a makeup artist. I learned initially from YouTube, and then I had two makeup counter experiences with two different brands. It was hard to learn from YouTube, I have to be honest, and the makeup counters were great in that I came away with lots of new makeup, but the downside was I never got to see how they applied the makeup!

When I trained as a makeup artist, the goal was to always help other women look and feel amazing. I wanted to take away the overwhelm of choosing the right products and colours. It was about tailoring a makeup routine to suit each individual and giving you the confidence and skills to be able to apply your makeup.

So why not consider a makeup lesson?

What is a makeup lesson? And how can it help you?

It is the perfect experience to learn how to tailor makeup to you and your style. The chance to find out the best-suited products for your skin type and colour tones. An experience that will build your knowledge and teach you the skills to confidently apply your makeup with ease.

A lesson is beneficial for all levels of ability; there are lots of new tips and techniques to learn that can be easily introduced into your routine. It is also perfect if you have never been shown how to wear makeup before and you want to learn the basics. We can literally tailor a lesson to suit your needs and help you achieve your desired outcome.

You may already be a makeup wearer and are just not sure if you are doing it right. Maybe you are unsure if you are using the best products for your skin type and age. That is OK; a lesson is perfect to discover the most suitable products for you. If you have been doing the same routine for years, literally years, and want to have a complete refresh and learn new ways of doing your makeup, receiving one-to-one guidance will give you the confidence to try something new.

If you are not a makeup wearer and would like to learn how to apply and enhance your features, a lesson is the perfect way to be guided to achieve a beautiful look you will love recreating.

Makeup should be something you wear for yourself when you feel like wearing it and to give you that extra boost. Makeup is all about enhancing what you have, bringing life to your face, and lighting you up with the right colours.

“Nicola took the time to go through all my products and advise which were best for me and my skin type.

A really good lesson followed with her making up one side of my face and me replicating on the other which was a really good way to learn. I would certainly recommend a private lesson with Nicola.

If you want to start with a simple makeup bag, something that will create a basic makeup routine, these are the products I would recommend to build a makeup bag of staples.

  1. Foundation: in the finish you desire, such as dewy, radiant, natural, satin, or matte.

  2. Concealer: used for under the eyes, to cover blemishes, and to provide extra coverage where you need it.

  3. Blusher

  4. Eyeshadow

  5. Mascara

  6. Eyebrow Pencil

  7. Lipstick, or tinted lip balm

If you have oily, or combination skin, I would recommend adding a primer to your routine, and potentially a setting spray to help your makeup to stay in place and last longer.

Makeup does not have to be complicated; just making the right tweaks and using the most suitable products for you will make a world of difference. Achieving a healthy, radiant, and youthful look is much easier than you think if this is the desired outcome you want. It is amazing to truly understand what works best for your skin and features and the colours that will enhance your face.

When clients contact me for a lesson, there seems to be a pattern.

The Two Things Everyone Always Has in Common

“How to look more age-appropriate but still youthful”

“How to find out what products you should be using”

My client base falls within the mature woman bracket, which I love. It gives me the opportunity to help women who have little or no knowledge. Who have been doing the same routine for years but desperately want a refresh, and who have been making do with their routine while feeling confused with what to use.

Do any of the following sound familiar to you?

  • How can I learn to do my makeup?

  • Where do I start with my makeup?

  • What makeup should a beginner buy?

  • How do you do basic makeup for beginners?

  • What are the dos and don’ts of makeup?

  • What makeup should I put on first?

  • Where can I get tips to improve my makeup?

  • What are the tips and tricks for basic makeup application?

  • What is the best makeup for mature skin?

  • What kind of makeup should an older woman wear?

  • What is the best makeup for middle-aged women?

  • How do I refresh my current makeup routine?

All of the above concerns and struggles can be resolved in one lesson. It can be overwhelming and confusing when you do not have the knowledge or help. That is where I step in.

Who Should Have A Personal Makeup Lesson?

  • Beginners who are looking to find the right products to use, how to apply their makeup, and in which order.

  • If you are looking to change your routine from what you have been doing but are not sure how or what suits you,

  • Mature ladies seeing their skin change know they need to adjust their makeup routine but would like some guidance.

  • For anyone wanting to learn some tips and tricks to apply their makeup better and make it last longer,

  • If you want to try some new products and brands to see what suits you without fully committing to a purchase,

The Reason Why You Would Love A Lesson?

Being able to finally create a routine you love and can easily recreate. Feeling a sense of relief knowing you are receiving the best guidance on the products to use and selecting the most flattering colours that enhance your face. I can promise you that you will find the right products for you!

You will get to see which makeup brushes are the best to use and how you can use them so your makeup applies beautifully and looks amazing.

Learn how to colour match your foundation correctly so, in the future, you can confidently buy a new shade when it is time to top up your makeup bag. You will also learn how to apply a foundation that evens out your skin tone flawlessly with far less product. If you are looking for subtle, radiant, and healthy skin, I can show you how you can achieve this with ease.

“Nicola arrived for my make up lesson bang on time and was absolutely lovely.

She shared lots of great tips with me and had the most amazing selection of makeup and brands so she could suggest both the expensive and cheap alternatives. My make up looked lovely at the end.

- Alice”

There is nothing quite like having one-on-one time with a professional makeup artist who can personalise the lesson to suit you and your needs. The lesson is all about you and achieving your very own makeup style that will light up your face and have people complimenting you on how well you look and how healthy and radiant your skin is.

Having dedicated time together is very different from a makeup counter experience; attention to detail and creating a beautiful look are key parts of the experience. There are no hard sales; all the recommendations are unbiased and based on experience working with the products and knowing what is good for your skin type and to achieve your best possible look.
