How Can I Feel More Confident With Makeup?

A lot of us feel we look our best when we are wearing makeup. It certainly helps to define our features that wouldn't normally be.

But what happens when you lack the confidence to apply makeup and feel like your best self?

If you are part of the generation who were born before YouTube came about, or well into your mid-30's and beyond when it was becoming popular, then the chances are you learned how to apply makeup from reading magazines or learning from friends. You may be like me, where your mom wore little to no makeup, and it wasn’t the natural thing to show your daughters how to wear makeup.

Learning How To Apply Makeup Used To Be A Stab In The Dark, Certainly A Lot Of Trial And Error.

It is certainly different now with tutorials being readily available and makeup counters being accessible, but how do you translate a video makeup tutorial that is suitable for you and your skin? How can you get impartial advice from a makeup counter without feeling the pressure to buy some or all of the products used on you?

My client base for private makeup lessons is anywhere from 35 years old right up to 70 years old. The reason why is because these ladies come from the pre-YouTube days when they couldn’t translate that video tutorial into a real-life makeup application. It is overwhelming due to so many products on the market to choose from, techniques that do not work for their age group or skin, or tutorials that are not realistic.

Relating To My Clients Is One Of My Strengths!

I was born in the early '80s. My mom used to wear just mascara and a crazy bold blue eyeshadow. My other memories of makeup growing up were seeing my Nan apply her makeup one day and watching her draw on her brows. That was it. I wasn’t allowed to wear mascara until I was 15 years old, and at that time, that was really pushing my luck.

My first real experience of makeup was reading about it in magazines and wearing a foundation in my later teens that was completely the wrong shade and a horrible orange-toned bronzer that looked like a stripe on my face, but at that time there weren’t the choices available to us now. I worked for Virgin Vie for about 6 months doing makeup parties and applying a routine to someone else. I was shown in my training what I needed to do, but to be honest, I just winged it.

I do not believe you should feel like you have to wear makeup every day. That sounds weird coming from a makeup artist, right? But I honestly believe that. To me, makeup is an expression of who you are as a person; it should be used to enhance your best features, not as a way to hide from the world and cover up.

My own personal makeup journey started when I was around 25 years old, just as YouTube was becoming the go-to platform for anything and everything. Every single day for about 18 months, I would obsessively watch makeup tutorials, eager to learn how to apply my own makeup better and better. I was becoming hooked on the core. It was around 28 years ago that I started to think about my future and what I wanted to do with my work life—what would actually make me happy—and that is when I started to look at becoming a makeup artist.

I Want To Help Women Feel Good About Themselves, Empower Women In Their Own Skin, and Share My Skills And Knowledge That I Have Learnt Over The Years. I Want To Help Others Feel Confident.

Makeup can be anything you want it to be, but I just hope that you do not feel you need to use it to hide away or to cover yourself up. We are all beautiful, and we all have features that should be enhanced in the best ways possible. Applying makeup does not have to be treated like a mask or a heavy layer of product. There is nothing more rewarding than showing a client how to apply their makeup in a better way that uses little product yet still achieves an amazing result that helps their confidence grow.

Here are some things I hear when clients want to book a private makeup lesson with me:

  • I have been doing the same routine for years and feel I need a refresh.

  • I was never shown how to apply makeup and am not sure if I am doing it right.

  • I feel overwhelmed by the number of products on the market, so I would like help deciding what is best for me.

  • I have no idea what colours suit me for blush, lipstick, and eyeshadow.

  • I never apply eyeshadow because I do not know how to, but I would like to learn.

  • My skin is changing as I get older, and I think I need to change my makeup routine.

  • I want to have more age-appropriate makeup.

  • I would like to learn how to apply my makeup better.

  • I have never known how to apply makeup and need some guidance.

  • I am not feeling very confident with how my makeup looks.

I understand firsthand what it is like to feel overwhelmed and confused with the makeup application and what the best products are to use. Trust me when I say that makeup does not have to be complicated to achieve the look you desire. All it takes is some knowledge, guidance, and practice.

To keep it simple just have the following products in your makeup bag;

  1. Foundation or Tinted Moisturiser: The best way to even out your skin tone

  2. Concealer: Best used for under the eyes and any areas of the face your foundation did not provide enough coverage for.

  3. Blush - Bring life and colour back into the skin.

  4. Bronzer - Optional but makes a beautiful difference to the structure of your face and brings warmth to the skin.

  5. Brow Gel or Pencil - Grooming your brows to frame your face will make a massive difference.

  6. Translucent Face Powder - Only recommended for oily and combination skin types.

  7. Mascara - The perfect way to make your eyes appear bigger and more awake.

  8. Lips - Optional but a tinted lip balm or lipstick will bring some colour to your face and will finish the makeup beautifully.

I have personally had two makeup counter makeovers and although the actual experience of being pampered and having someone apply my makeup was amazing, it was also just a sales pitch session to get me to buy the products used which by the way I did.

For extra support and guidance with feeling confident applying your makeup, the best advice I can give you is to book a private makeup lesson. Having a professional on hand to guide you through the application process and the product selection for your skin type is worth its weight in gold. I know it is biassed for me to say that, but honestly, it is the best investment you will make in yourself.

The good thing about having a lesson with me is that I have 7 years of experience to share with you. I have a lot of products that I can recommend to you, and the best part is that I am not associated with any particular brand, so everything I recommend is for personal or professional use. There will only be products used that perform and are actually worth investing in.
