During makeup lessons it’s not unusual to meet clients who have never owned makeup brushes, had some but not the correct ones, or brushes that are so old they really need to retire. I will always give a list of brushes that I think they need, and generally speaking we are only talking 6/7 brushes at most.

Brush sets are great value for money but I do find there are two or three brushes that you will not reach for often, so I prefer to recommend individual brushes tailored to your needs.

My absolute favourite brand of brushes is Zoeva, they are affordable, incredible quality, and they wash very well and look brand new after drying. A lot, if not all, of my Zoeva brushes have lasted for years and bare in mind I deep clean my brushes after every client. For reference I started doing makeup in 2014 so these are stood the test of time.

There are other brush brands I pick up that are even more affordable and great to use, so let me give you the run down of the what I recommend.

This is by far my most used foundation brush, and the one I will always have clients use in a makeup lesson. I find the diameter of the brush is perfect for not overloading with too much foundation. If you have a larger brush you tend to use far more foundation than is needed.

The bristles are fairly firm but also have a great flex so you can blend your foundation into the skin well. This brush withstands multiple washes well and never loses its shape!

This is the best value for money if you want a flat brush to initially apply eyeshadow onto the lid. The angled brush is perfect for applying brow powder, or a powder eyeliner, and the dome brush I like to use to blend concealer under the eye.

I love that you also have a spoolie to brush through your brows, if you are not one to fill in your brows just giving them a brush can make a big difference.

I refer to this brush as the workhorse as it will help blend your powder eyeshadow to perfection. I will never do an eye application without this brush.

Time and time again I am always impressed with how white the bristles are after each wash, this brush always looks brand new. When wet you want to reshape the bristles and it will dry perfectly into its original shape.

This is a handy brush to have if you find you are coming too far out or too high with your eyeshadow. It blends away any excess product but also seamlessly blends the edges of your eyeshadow.

If you have been too heavy handed with the Zoeva 227 brush this brush in particular will smooth away any harsh edges. I refer to this as my magic eraser!

One of the softest cheek brushes I have used! This may not be the cheapest brush however you want the quality. Using cheap face brushes can feel scratchy on the skin which can also result in a poor application of product.

I love to multi-task this brush and use this for both blusher and bronzer. After multiple washes you may find some blushers can stain the bristles, but the quality and softness of the brush will always be the same as when you first purchased it.

The above are all the brushes I genuinely recommend to clients, the most important thing is to buy brushes that are quality and will wash well multiple times and hold their shape.
